The last two years have transformed the domestic art trade, making hybrid auctions more commonplace and helping to broaden the collector base. The growing interest in contemporary art and the value growth of artworks is clearly demonstrated by the many lifetime records and the fact that the average price of the 10 most expensive artworks auctioned has almost doubled compared to 2019.
“The second half of 2021 saw several outstanding paintings come to the market, so it is not surprising that the hammer price of the highest-priced works has all exceeded the HUF 100 million dream mark. And the fact that Csontváry’s Mysterious Island nearly doubled the Hungarian auction record to HUF 460 million could have a long-term stimulating effect on the entire art trade. In the future, collectors are likely to find it easier to cross the HUF 250 million thresholds for really high-quality works.”— reported Anna Kelen, art historian of the Virág Judit Gallery.
