A fusion of thought fragments: how the identity of Transylvanian Design Week was born

What is Transylvanian design? This is the question addressed by the first event specifically showcasing Transylvanian creatives. Transylvanian Design Week (TWD), which takes place in Miercurea-Ciuc (Csíkszereda) between 18 February and 10 March, aims to capture a snapshot that will inspire the local creative community to think together. The visuals of the event series reinforce the same ideas. We asked the designers from BOLD studio about the TWD identity.

“The biggest challenge was to create the identity of the first design week without trying to make any statements about what (we think) Transylvanian design means,” said the members of the BOLD graphic design studio. Thus, based on the central theme of the event, they created a design that visually reflects the ambitions of Transylvanian Design Week.

Visually, they were inspired by the idea of collecting design ‘thought fragments’ starting from the announcement of the TWD competition until the opening of its main event. This concept also shaped the logo and the design of the symbols that complement it. “The idea for the different, minimalistic basic patterns came from the approaches, bits of ideas, or objects that we collect together and from which a bigger picture can be drawn. In addition to these few basic motifs outlining the initials of the Transylvanian Design Week, we also used them to build the icon set and the various illustrations. For example, the symbol for the deadline is an hourglass, while the extension of the deadline is a rotated hourglass,” they explained.

“We’ve also based the social media platforms and the website on this: both are initially a blank sheet, inviting you to add your perspective. Transylvanian Design Week will be what Transylvanian designers put together. It was important to present an authentic, contemporary face to the professional community, so that despite it being a first edition, they would still have confidence in the event,” they added.

In addition to the visual presentation of the core message of the event, the BOLD studio also sought to create a modular identity that would be open enough to evolve with the event. “We also knew that we never wanted to give a uniform answer to the key question of Design Week, but just to start a conversation and create a snapshot of what is coming together at a given point, from the work of particular designers. And this picture is never complete, it is always changing and evolving,” the creators concluded.
