This park created in a 90 m2 apartment at the 27th floor of a 50-story skyscraper in the framework of an experimental project has everything it should, except for birdsong and blue sky.
When I was a kid, I had a recurring dream about a flat filled with water. Later I devoted all my energies to transform our downtown apartment into a beach. Therefore, I was particularly touched by Olafur Eliasson’s installation from a few years ago when he filled a white cube space of a museum with soil, stones and a stream. And now I can meet my childhood dreams once again in this Chinese apartment.
In the city of Xiamen, China, in the quite densely populated district of Xinglin Bay, the very few parks located amongst skyscrapers were all privatized a few years ago, thus prohibiting residents from visiting them freely. The experimental and symbolic project of DEVOLUTION new media studio aimed to respond to this situation (while also being quite relevant in the current situation caused by the coronavirus), in which they transformed a 90 m2 apartment on the 27th floor of a 50-story building into a public park.
The postmodern installation examines the relationship between private and public spaces in big cities and the citizens’ relationship with each other. The park functioning in the real space is also complemented by an online interface, allowing those interested to access the apartment-park any time.
The project only survived a few months, but the 300 residents of the building and those living in the neighborhood were free to use it while it lasted.
