Heatherwick Studio has designed a unique green oasis for the Hudson River. The park called Little Island is one of the first free recreational areas freshly opened in New York City since the beginning of the pandemic.
The island’s structure is supported by 280 concrete piles that bear 132 concrete ‘tulips’, each unique in shape and weight load capacity, holding up the soil.
Greening was led by the landscape architecture firm MNLA, integrating more than 350 species of flowers, trees, and shrubs across the park.
