BIG's plan to make undersea mining more environmentally friendly

The studio Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) designed a factory and a number of mining tools and ships for The Metals Company.

After the exploitation of overland deposits, companies are considering the opportunities (and possible damages) of undersea mining. Metals that can be extracted from the depths of the sea (such as nickel, cobalt, copper and manganese) are needed in large quantities for the production of batteries used in electric vehicles. Although the seabed is a significant source of materials, mining can have a devastating pollutive impact and cause serious damage to the deep-sea ecosystem. BIG’s designers researched more environmentally friendly strategies for the process, and designed a mining and manufacturing plant for The Metals Company that could operate in the spirit of recycling and carbon neutrality. The plan includes ships, underwater robotic equipment as well as a factory building.
