Budapest by Labrosse | Lindenbaum House

Even Hulk can’t stand this noise, he’s all flattened out, as the snake with pink hands has been blasting Heartbreak Hotel since ages. What’s up Elvis? A subtle cry comes from the boarded-up window, the abandoned flower escapes the “death zone”. Wolves, golden mermaids, golden peacocks – standing still in the fuss. On the first floor, the crowned skull decides who can come through that green door locked with seven locks: is it going to be Mr. Brain or Mr. Heart? The special characters of Daniel Labrosse take over the buildings of Budapest for an entire year here, on HYPEANDHYPER! Look at the picture, and try to find the hand reaching out a wrench now in Lindenbaum House!

“The Art Nouveau facade of Lindenbaum House under Izabella utca 94 is standing between the relatively conventional building of Izabella utca 92 and his weather-beaten twin situated at No. 96, awaiting renovation. It stands out from its neighbors in terms of ornamentation insomuch that I noticed it as a child while sitting on the trolley bus right away. It was like a magical fairy tale illustration. Golden-glistening suns with human faces, griffins, peacocks, sparrows, flowers and trees, snakes and angels (or at least that’s what I thought of the golden female figures as a kid). I was sure that the dwellers of this magical house must be cartoon characters, too. Now I finally drew these characters, or how I imagined them” – tells us Dani about his latest work.

Your task this time: find the hand reaching out a wrench!

Lindenbaum House

The Lindenbaum Houses located under Izabella utca 94-96 are the first Art Nouveau buildings in Budapest. Besides numerous other tenement houses in the capital, this special pair of tenement houses was also designed by architect duo Frigyes Spiegel and Fülöp Weinréb in the year of the millennium, in 1896. There are no sills or pillars on the houses, however, they are much more dominated by colors and ornamentation – in their original condition, the bigger building was dominated by the colors of blue-green and yellow, while the facade of the narrower one was dominated by red and green tones, as well as some gilt. The basic elements of ornamentation – Earth, Water, Fire and Air – were divided between the facades of the two houses: while the building under No. 94 displayed Earth and Air, the one under No. 96 displayed Water and Fire. Unfortunately, the latter can hardly be seen today. The fronts of the tenement houses subject to heritage protection were completely destroyed in World War II, and the building under No. 94 was renovated after the turn of the millennium.
