Some of Austria’s most iconic images have been “repainted” by artificial intelligence in a style that closely mimics the original, as part of an unusual advertising campaign.
What is one of the most popular topics of all time on the internet? Cats, and more specifically, cat memes. Over the last year, the issue of artificial intelligence has earned a close second place, getting featured on every possible forum and media outlet. Vienna’s Tourism Council came up with an idea to combine the two: they harnessed the power of AI to ‘cat-over’ a series of famous paintings, all of which are on display in the Austrian capital’s museums.
The aim of the unconventional campaign is to draw attention to the fact that there is real art behind the artificially generated images and, of course, to lure people into the city’s museums. Although popular programs such as DALL-E and Midjourney allow anyone to create what look like works of art in a matter of minutes, they are no match for the genius of the painters. There’s even a little extra humor in the campaign to add to the already amusing concept: a series of videos have been released in which the AI-generated cat-infused paintings are analyzed in embarrassing and hilarious detail as if they were real works of art.
