Floating sauna: a combination of water, fire, and air

A special collaboration, a meeting between a designer and a sailor has lead to the creation of Czechia’s first floating sauna. This open water sauna is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to relax or benefit from the positive health effects. A combination of elegance, mobility, and a joy of freedom floating on the water.

Šimon Pelikán, project leader and inventor of the Plavby Olomouc and Olodvorek projects—who is also a world champion in water skiing—and Martin Hudák, co-founder of the Ostrava-based design and architecture firm Ateliér3M, have been working together since 2015. The concept to offer sauna lovers a new experience was conceived two years ago.

“We originally had this idea as an element of a spa center we were developing, but we didn’t use it and it was kept on the shelf for a long time,” said Martin Hudák.

Both designers focused on excellent quality, sustainability, beauty and durability when creating their concepts. The advantage of the sauna is that it can be easily transported and disassembled, allowing the owner to relax in any open water of their choice. The all-wood construction eliminates the need for wool or foil insulation found in barrel saunas or original Finnish log saunas.

The floating saunas are based on the principle of the Finnish version. Their maximum heating capacity is 85°C. Their lightweight design allows them to float on the surface, in direct contact with the water, so you can refresh yourself anytime by immersing yourself in the water. By alternating between targeted warming and cooling phases, the use of floating saunas has a much more intense effect on the body than their regular alternatives.

According to the project’s developers, floating saunas offer a new way to improve and popularise the sauna experience. The opportunity to spend time in nature, regardless of the weather or the season, is one of the most valuable parts of their concept. “The freedom and ability to experience a sauna are what we love most about everything. To enjoy a different perspective every time and feel the flow of the river,” says Martin, co-creator of the concept.

“We really just want to bring joy to people and teach them a whole new way to unwind,” conclude the designers.

The sauna is available in three sizes: ‘S’ for two people, ‘M’ for four people and ‘L’ for six people. The only model is currently on display and can be tested in a lake in Sobáov, near Olomouc.
