Perhaps the coolest wine bar in Eastern Europe, House of Wine in Moravia was born out of a 19th century brewery and a warehouse building from the ‘70s.
Although the Czech Republic makes most of us think of beers, this does not mean that there are no good wine regions in the country. The Moravian region is specifically known for its wines. The institution called House of Wine is also located here, in the town of Znojmo – we use the word institution deliberately, as “wine bar” does not really cover all that this spot represents.
As mentioned before, the building has 19th century roots, and it was used as a warehouse building in the 1970s. Architect studio Chybik + Kristof started out from this basis when they first begin the works of House of Wine. The different layers of history are not only piled on each other within the building: the bar also has a view to a chapel from the 9th century and a Gothic church tower.
The aim of the architects was, therefore, to create a place where the different eras interact with one another. Although the walls are painted white, the prints of the industrial brick wall can still be seen behind the coat of white. The structure forming the top floor, the bar and the gallery resembles the atmosphere of churches. All these are complemented by minimalist lamps and colorful Vitra chairs.
One cannot only taste wine in the building, as an exhibition space was also established where visitors can get to know the wineries of the region.
