Jil Sander reworks the Birkenstock models

Birkenstock footwear is one of our many favorites: ergonomic, reserved and never garish, truly authentic pieces. Now, as part of the shoe brand’s project called ‘1774’, they teamed up with Jil Sander to rethink their classic designs. Check it out!

In the framework of the ‘Birkenstock 1774’ project the brand has already collaborated with Valentino, Proenza Schouler, and Rick Owens, and now, joining forces with Jil Sander, they have dreamed up organic, sculptural, and sensual pieces. “We wanted to keep the essence of Birkenstock but we wanted to introduce new materials and play with the proportion,” highlighted Lucie and Luke Meier, creative directors of the brand Jil Sander. The most significant reshaping was the enlargement of the outsole, which gave the shoe a wider, more important rand and top silhouette. As part of the collection, the Arizona, Milano, and Berlin models were reimagined in cream, olive, and black shades with exaggerated silhouettes and suede leather, while Birkenstock’s closed-toe sandal got reinvented with a new shape, under the name, Velan.
