The Slovak illustrator takes a new approach to religious themes, while his architectural background gives his work a more profound dimension. His stunning artwork offers a unique visual experience and pushes the traditional boundaries of the gospel and faith representation.
Ličko is originally from central Slovakia, but after university, he settled in Brno, Czech Republic, where he has worked ever since. Although he had always wanted to draw, Ličko graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. He only then began to work more seriously in illustration, despite having been involved in small projects during his studies.
When he was younger, he used to sit in the garden with his grandfather, indulging in their shared love of drawing, but university meant that this passion was temporarily neglected. It was only a long time later that his path to book illustration was sparked by a dear friend, Miška Malinová, who approached him at university about a project. This finally made the dream come true and has been a dream ever since.
As well as illustration and art, one of the most important parts of Ličko’s life is his faith, and his work often explores biblical and Christian themes. His aim is to present the gospel and God in a new and modern way, making it more accessible to people today. His characters are both reminiscent of prehistoric, archaic figures and evocative of the latest illustration trends. As is typical of Christian art, it is important to Ličko that his images have a deeper, symbolic layer that goes beyond simple illustration.
As with the content of the drawings, his technique is timeless, trying to combine the latest digital solutions with more traditional approaches. Although he is now primarily a graphic designer, his art still reflects the perspective that has been inspired by his architecture studies, a point of view from which he looks at his large-scale paintings, in which composition and the various archetypal elements found in architecture play an important role.
