The Slovene Cultural Holiday arrives tomorrow

On the 8th of February, the anniversary of the death of the poet France Prešeren, the Slovene Cultural Holiday will be celebrated in Slovenia and among Slovenian communities in neighboring countries.

On the eve of the celebration, two artists will receive lifetime achievement awards and up to six will receive the Prešeren Foundation Award for their work over the past three years. The bank holiday will be marked by events throughout the country, many of which will include readings of poems by the Slovenian Romantic poet Prešeren.

The celebrations will also extend beyond Slovenia’s borders, with a three-day festival in Zagreb and concerts and film screenings in Trieste on the 12th, a poetry reading in Szentgotthárd, Hungary, and a carnival log pulling (a local folk custom, a toung-in-cheek reminder of the importance of marriage—the Transl.) Apatistvánfalva, Hungary.
