Ukrainian art projection covers monumental Chicago building

Every night between the 10th and 17th of November, the Kyiv-based studio PHOTINUS will project its light and sound installation using a monumental building as a canvas, as part of the Art on the Mart project in Chicago.

Before the war, PHOTINUS Studio was featured in several art festivals, including the Venice Biennale. Originally, a screening of Mikola Leontovich’s Ring Christmas Bells was to be shown in Kyiv as a celebration of Ukrainian identity and cultural diplomacy, but after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the project was canceled.

Chicago’s Art on the Mart—the world’s largest permanent digital art screening, which takes place at a twenty-five-story building, and was launched in 2018—eventually hosted the work. Chicago is an ideal location for the production because the city is home to over 200,000 Ukrainians, making it one of the largest Ukrainian diaspora communities in the United States.
