Not only is the latest bicycle parking garage built in the Hague one of the largest bike garages of the Netherlands, but certainly the most spectacular one, too.
The underground parking garage providing space for approximately 8,000 bicycles is located next to the Hague’s central railway station, thus adding an important node to the city’s infrastructure.
Design studios Silo and Studio Marsman working on the project wanted to create a space that does not recall the atmosphere of the depressing, low-ceiling and dark underground parking garages at all.
The white ceiling, the back-lit glass walls and wide corridors result in quite airy and light spaces indeed, with periodically changing, exciting surfaces facilitating our navigation in the space and helping us find the way back to our bicycle. The patterns of the walls were inspired by the work of Dutch artist M. C. Escher. Escher became widely known for his artworks featuring seemingly impossible geometrical transformations. The shapes on the wall of the parking garage represent the past, present, and future architecture of the Hague, all displayed in Escher’s style.
