After Vienna and Riehen, nature has recently taken over another cultural institution, now in London. As part of the London Design Biennale, the unique forest installation in the courtyard of the Somerset House will be on view until June 27.
Stage designer Es Devlin, who regularly creates stage installations for artists like Beyoncé and Kanye West, acting as the artistic director of the London Design Biennale 2021 has carried out an unusual project in the British capital. Generally, during the biennale, the courtyard of Somerset House is lined by the participating nations’ pavilions, however, this year, it will be covered by an installation called “Forest for Change – The Global Goal Pavilion” featuring 400 trees. According to Devlin, just like in literature, this forest will also represent a place of transformation.
This unique space will bring together 23 tree species local to the UK and Northern Europe. The installation created in partnership with Project Everyone aims to showcase the facts behind the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Each tree will be replanted in the city once the exhibition is over.
