The Georgian fashion designer’s stunning outfits both evoke the real historical past and create a new, magical world, the product of his imagination.
Lasha Devdariani, founder and creative director of the brand of the same name, graduated from the universities of Tbilisi, first from the State Theatre and Cinema University, majoring in State Art and Costume Design, and then from the Fine Arts Academy of Georgia, where he obtained his Master’s degree in Fashion Design. Despite his young age, he already has a wealth of experience, including an internship under the patronage of Guram Gvasalia, creative director of the luxury global brand VETEMENTS.
For Lasha, fashion is a means of self-expression that reveals who we really are. From a very young age, he has always been interested in looking inward, spending most of his days drawing and immersing himself in his own enchanted world. That he would eventually find his way into fashion was unintentional. He finally committed himself because he felt that textile design would allow him to apply a folk aesthetic to his art.
The most striking feature of his clothes is the creative use of various folk motifs and patterns. Sometimes we get the impression of looking at typical Georgian costumes, but in fact, the artist draws from much more diverse sources. He is mostly inspired by his travels, during which he has the opportunity to meet new people and cultures. One of his favorite techniques, for example, is a traditional Indian quilt stitch called kantha, and his most frequently used design is that of the kimono, an emblematic piece of Japanese national costume.
His garments are all individually designed and handmade, which means his collections are only available for a limited time. Another exciting feature of his work is that he often works with recycled fabrics, giving these materials another chance. He calls this reincarnation as his materials take on a new form, but carry with them all the experiences that have been passed on to them during their ‘life’.
