Hungarian designers presented their work in Milan to over 100,000 spectators

Milan Design Week, one of Europe’s most important design events, took place last week, where Hungarian designers and craftsmen were also represented.

Milan Design Week, the world’s largest annual design event, has come to an end, with Hungarian designers and craftspeople have showcased their work between 17-23 April. Under the umbrella brand of the Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency, Budapest Select, 40 Hungarian design brands presented their unique creations at two venues, the Alcova and the Rossana Orlandi Gallery.

Participation in Milan Design Week is an excellent opportunity for Hungarian designers to present themselves on the international stage. The newest venue of the Design Week, Alcova, which focuses on emerging talents, hosted 121 objects by 37 Hungarian designers and craftspeople, with a 150 square meter space dedicated to the Budapest Select exhibition, which presented a cross-section of Hungarian design. Gáspár Bonta, the curator of the exhibition, came up with a concept divided into six sections, the main message of which was that contemporary objects have traditional stories attached to them and that the fusion of innovation and technology with the traditional use of materials could be the future of Hungarian design.

Alcova is an arena for experimentation and innovation, each year channeling a different historically significant site into the bloodstream of Milan through design. This year’s audience of more than 100,000 visitors included showroom representatives, interior designers, architects, private buyers, and trade journalists, many of whom were curious to see Budapest Select alongside the design-loving public. The fact that many of the trade visitors initiated on-site discussions is an excellent feedback and a promising sign for the near future. The objects of Hungarian designers and craftspeople were well suited to this lively and stimulating arena, where they attracted the attention of the international press. Vogue, Domus, Repubblica, Elle Decor, Artribune, and the Italian Corriere della Sera, among others, reported on the Budapest Select umbrella brand exhibition of Hungarian products.
