With its new pieces, the Swedish furniture company is aiming to make you feel like you’re browsing a Far Eastern bazaar.
Well, IKEA isn’t just selling flat-pack furniture: it regularly enlists the help of artisans for its limited-edition collections, and most recently we reported on its Artist in Residence Programme with Annie Leibovitz. This time, the inspiration for the new pieces comes from Asia: they specifically want to emulate the feeling of shopping in a local market in an exotic country. Over the last decade, IKEA has partnered with a number of ethical companies in Asia, from India to Vietnam, to create new handmade pieces.
The product development started during the 2021 lockdowns and travel restrictions, which further complicated an already difficult process due to language barriers. But the end result tells it all: the home accessories are all handmade using traditional techniques in an environmentally friendly way. The MÄVINN line of handwoven lampshades, baskets, rugs, pillowcases, and placemats will hit the shelves in June.
