The 19th-century factory building of the Żnin Sugar Factory in Poland covers an area of 35 hectares and has undergone a complete reconstruction and transformation to be reborn as a conference and leisure center. The facility is based on the concept of a “city within a city”, which is why this lakeside post-industrial zone has everything you need for a comfortable stay and relaxation: two hotel buildings, conference rooms, restaurants, bars, its own brewery, cinema, SPA and water park.
The factory building is located at 1 Janickiego in Żnin, where the sugar factory started operating in 1894. The initiators of its creation were local landowners with Poles as well as Germans on the company’s board. In the time of the Polish People’s Republic, the sugar factory was one of the largest workplaces and functioned in its original role until 2004.
Reconstruction of the facility was completed in 2020, a hotel was built in the main production building, the former warehouses were converted into conference venues, and restaurants were opened. The first hotel building has 182 rooms and the second 134.
The building of the former Żnin Sugar Factory has been transformed into a conference and recreation center, and the investor also plans to have a rehabilitation center and a doctor’s office on site. The rest of the complex includes the Sugar Museum, the Museum of Optimism and a retail park.
The transformation of the industrial complex was developed by Marek Bulak (Bulak Projekt Studio) with Piotr Grochowski (Arche Group), who was also one of the key people in the project. Even Less is Core, MML Architekci and MIXD were involved in the design.
The revitalization of the facility has been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2022, in which it competes for the title of best building in the European Union.
