Philharmonic center envisioned as “urban ribbon” in Prague

The winning design for the Vltava Philharmonic Hall in Prague has been announced. In addition to the winning project by the Bjarke Ingels Group, it’s worth taking a look at the joint vision of CHYBIK + KRISTOF and Mecanoo. The building was envisioned to meet the standards of 21st century symphony concerts, to meet the needs of an integrated cultural and social center through the development of a modern structure and exceptional acoustic design of the halls, to pay tribute to Czech history and culture, but also to meet the contemporary needs of the city.

The architects envisioned the building as an integral part of Prague’s existing landscape, with an active program of cooperation with the urban environment, adapting to the city’s unique topography to ensure long-term economic sustainability and commercial development. The building design, which can be defined as an “urban ribbon,” encompasses two separate cylindrical halls, which form an open-air amphitheater together, connecting the lobby and the open stage for cultural events.
