Recipes, composting, and storage practices—a guidebook to help you get started on your food-saving journey. Introducing No Food Left Behind!
Boró Hajdu is a student at the Institute of Visual Arts at the Eszterházi Károly University in Eger, Hungary. As she pointed out, graphic design offers many opportunities to try out various digital and manual solutions, as well as different media and styles, and it is a field that gives her enough space to develop her creativity. “It’s this constant change that inspires me,” she adds. Although she constantly seeks to challenge her skills, she also strives to create a recognizable visual world: her work is primarily illustrative, yet it is neat and often dominated by vibrant colors. The same approach characterizes her latest project, No Food Left Behind!, which raises awareness of the issue of food waste.
Boró’s home environment inspired the content of the booklet. “Growing up in the countryside, I was often reminded by my parents and grandparents that every bite is ‘gold’. It’s understandable because you see food differently when you produce it yourself. Obviously, no one wants to waste all that hard work by throwing food away. So now I try to ensure that even if there is food left over, it doesn’t end up in the trash, no matter where I am. This doesn’t always work, so I wanted to dig deeper into the subject, and my research resulted in No Food Left Behind!”—she detailed.
The distinctive and friendly manual covers more details of food rescue, including a dedicated recipe section alongside storage and composting advice. “I managed to find ways of preparing food that only required a few ingredients, but where some ingredients were optional or could be substituted—this was very instructive for me,” she added.
Boró also chose an environmentally friendly technique to promote conservation methods for the pocket-sized publication. The riso-printed zine features a napkin-like case and a palette of gold, red and black. Boró says that she likes to include hidden references in her work, and she has done the same for this issue: for example, the topic of conservation is illustrated by four Campbell’s Soup Cans by Andy Warhol.
Although No Food Left Behind! was part of a university project, Boró would like to present her publication at various zine festivals, as well as on the tables of brunch and breakfast places and cafés promoting sustainable living.
