Sewing for sustainability | PINKPONILO’s year review

They didn’t throw any textile to waste last year either, worked with several sustainable fashion brands in addition to various projects and managed to hold their events, too. PINKPONILO’s community workshop is here with a year review!

The last year was full of challenges and hardships for all of us and so we are always happy if we get some good news amidst all the bad.

PINKPONILO opened their community sewing studio in the fall of 2017 in the spirit of promoting sustainable fashion. The team helps those interested create unique garments from design to manufacturing by organizing thematic workshops, thus increasing the confidence of the wearer.

Even though their studio in downtown Budapest was standing empty for a long time in early 2020, PINKPONILO developed a lot in terms of digitization and also expanded their crew with a social media-communication team. They participated in new local, cultural and theater collaborations with partners like Pagony Bookstore, K2 Theater Groupand the Budapest Puppet Theater, amongst others.

And this was only the beginning. For PINKPONILO it is also important to work together with designers and creatives: they contributed to the product development and manufacturing of Budapest-based PIZSI brand operating along sustainable principles as well as La Fleur du Temps and TheVIVgoods in Berlin. In the future, they plan collaborative projects with dance artist Emese Nagy and a London-based group of researchers.

“In terms of collaborations with designers, we are more and more connected by our aspiration for sustainability: these brands prefer natural materials, skin-friendly and natural, or perhaps even hand-dyed methods. Last year we had the opportunity to work with a local sewing shops, embroiderers and a company distributing OEKO-TEX textiles,” the team highlighted.

In addition to the collaborations, they also managed to launch projects that will continue this year, too. They held a community sewing day in Bátonyterenye in collaboration with Adománytaxi, which will exist and operate under the name Varroda-Vissza in 2021. Their project titled BP Textile Room also reached a new milestone, as they made it to the Climate-KIC Launchpadprogram. The aim of the initiative is to create a common platform for regional and sustainable suppliers as well as art and design universities.

And last, but not least, a milestone that is particularly important to PINKPONILO: in their three and a half years of operation, last year they could greet a male participant at their sewing workshop finally!

For more novelties, keep an eye on PINKPONILO’s Facebook and Instagram pages, where you cannot only get updates about their events, but also learn more about sustainable fashion and zero waste living.
