The first restaurants in the Hungarian countryside to receive a Michelin Star

Hungarian restaurants scored a resounding success at yesterday’s Michelin Guide awards ceremony.

For months now, gastra-heads and fans have been speculating as to which Hungarian restaurant located outside of the capitol would be the first to win the Michelin star, but the results exceeded everyone’s expectations. The winner of the evening was undoubtedly the Platán restaurant of Tata, led by István Pesti, which won 2 Stars. The only other restaurant in Hungary to have received this award was the renowned Budapest restaurant, Stand, helmed by Tamás Széll and Szabina Szulló. In the countryside, another 1 Star was awarded to 42 in Esztergom. In addition, the Green Star which is given for sustainability efforts has never been awarded to a Hungarian restaurant before, but now not less than four restaurants have received the award: Onyx Workshop and Salt in Budapest, Almalomb in Langhetény, and Graefl Major Kétútköz in Poroszló.

Gwendall Poullenec, International Director of the Michelin Guides, greeted the Hungarian gastronomic scene online during the awards ceremony. “We are delighted to present the first Michelin Guide Hungary, which highlights that talent can be found in every part of the country. The inspectors were impressed by this culinary destination and the 62 restaurants presented in the 34 Hungarian towns and villages, in addition to Budapest, are plenty to celebrate. Our Inspectors encountered an authentic culinary landscape steeped in tradition, run by talented and creative professionals who take pride in their culture, and who constantly reinvent time-honored recipes to impress travelers and gourmets from all over the world. All 62 restaurant teams should be proud to be included in the Michelin Guide selection,” he remarked in his speech.
