István Kerekes has won more than three thousand national and international awards over the past twenty-five years. Here are some of his breathtaking works!
The photojournalist and photo artist from Târgu Mureș mainly shoots socio-photographs and portraits, with one of his most recurring themes being the life of shepherds. In an interview, he said: “(...) my whole life as a photographer is one big project called Transylvania and Maramures”. These are the places to which he has been returning regularly for years.
His most famous photo is Yelena (below), a little girl from Maramures smiling back at us. The photo has won six hundred awards in fifty-seven countries, setting a world record.
“It was obvious to me that I had created an exceptional portrait, but I didn’t expect it to be such a success. Everyone can take a photograph these days. So I’m more proud of the fact that I managed to capture such a unique moment that makes you mesmerized when you look at it. I feel that’s the real secret of my photography and the reason why it’s so successful to this day.”
In the last two years, he has achieved international success with his photo Alexandru and Peter (the cover photo of the article), featuring two Transylvanian shepherds. Perhaps his biggest acknowledgment is that the photo won him the 2021 IPPAWARDS Grand Prize, which was covered by the Washington Post, The Guardian, and the Daily Mail. This year, the photo also won Gold at the London Photography Awards.
