Yesterday, we reached another (space) history milestone: a NASA space probe crashed into an asteroid for the first live planetary defense test in history. So there’s reason to celebrate, not only on Earth but also in space—with champagne!
The Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar champagne was created for the French Maison Mumm champagne house by designer Octave de Gaulle, so that you can drink champagne in space. It is the first champagne bottle designed for space travel and will be served on flights by private space exploration company Axiom Space, starting in 2023.
The high-tech bottle is designed to meet specific conditions and safety requirements. The regulations state that champagne must be stored and transported in a bottle and sealed with a traditional cork. With this in mind, the 375-milliliter bottle of Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is secured by a stainless steel closure that prevents the cork from bursting and is wrapped in an aerospace-grade aluminum shell.
“The design and shape are similar to a traditional champagne bottle and reproduce as faithfully as possible the ritual of champagne tasting,” said de Gaulle. In zero gravity, not only the senses but also the champagne changes, for example, the bubbles do not rise to the surface. “After uncorking, when pressing the button located at the bottom of the bottle, the champagne exits through the neck and gathers in the ring that once held the cork in place,” de Gaulle explained. But it’s not just the bottle, but the champagne as well, that is specifically designed to be drunk in space.
“Axiom’s collaboration with Mumm and the Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar recognizes that to bring humanity to space we can’t just bring humans, we need to bring human traditions,” said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space.
