Not only has the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the world of sports, it has also rearranged the scheduled events of the art scene completely. And now the London Design Biennale has become one of them. The third edition of the global design muster is postponed to next year.
According to the organizers, the reason behind their decision is undoubtedly the current pandemic:
Keeping our visitors and designers safe remains our priority and given the current international travel restrictions and potential quarantine requirements, we are postponing the 2020 Biennale exhibition to 2021.
The event was supposed to be held between September 8 and September 27, 2020. The biennale is postponed to June next year, however, it will still be held at the same venue, Somerset House in London.
The year’s theme is Resonance, and it is curated by designer Es Devlin. Creatives from around 50 countries and territories will respond to this theme with exciting installations and presentations.
The jury includes senior curator of design at New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Paola Antonelli and senior curator at the V&A Victoria Broackes.
The biennale established in 2016 by John Sorrell and Ben Evans is one of the most important events of the global design scene, and so the organizers also tried to calm the tensions by announcing the following:
Nobody knows what the situation with COVID-19 will be in six months, so we are designing an innovative responsible programme which can adapt to the situation at the time.
