Rakova Jelša park connects the city of Ljubljana and the neighboring vast marshland, while also reinterpreting the relationship between nature and the built environment. This is where we invite you in the latest episode of our PACE X HYPEANDHYPER series.
Walking path, bike route, picnic area, outdoor cinema, community garden— architecture studio Medprostor added several new functions to Rakova Jelša park connecting Ljubljana with the marshland lying south of the city. The once neglected, chaotic area left to uncontrolled gardening and used as a junkyard has become a flourishing public space today.
On the one hand, a proper infrastructure was needed on the area to start cultivating the land in an organized manner: to achieve this, the architects used the cast plates of demolished sheds, amongst others. They recycled the former wooden planks to build the new recreation facilities, including benches and a bike stand.
The walking path starting at Ljubljanica river functions as a study trail, while the formerly unused space under the highway overpass is inhabited by a boathouse with a bar. Even the playground is adjusted to the character of the moorland, and this attitude is what gives the singularity of the project: even though the park forms part of the city, it still brings its users closer to nature.
