Center of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky | Lviv, Ukraine

The innovative Center of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky in Lviv is considered an exemplary building all across Ukraine. In the latest episode of our PACE X HYPEANDHYPER series, we’ll look at what makes this contemporary building loveable for users.

The Sheptytsky Center forming part of the Ukrainian Catholic University was handed over in 2017 with the aim of giving a broad spectrum research center and library to the university and of housing the administrative spaces of the institution. The main feature of the building designed by Behnisch Architekten is openness: considered a core value of the university, the architects strived to translate this concept into the language of architecture.

A prominent example of this is the fact that the building is 100% barrier-free. The architects sought to design all spaces to be as flexible as possible so that they could serve as the venue of cultural events while also remaining perfect spots for researching, learning and meeting.

The library of the building is suitable for all the latter, designed in a manner taking the best contemporary examples as a basis. Thus, in addition to research, the library is also a space for meeting where students can discuss their studies with each other and inspire one another.

An eye-catching architectural prayer in an artificially divided country. Light for knowledge, openness for inclusivity, innovation for progress—gestures complementing each other in an exemplary quality.Zoltán Schrammmel DLA, assistant professor
